The Isaiah Berlin Papers

Isaiah Berlin’s extensive papers were donated to the Bodleian Library in 1999 by his Literary Trustees. In 2001 an award by the Arts and Humanities Research Board enabled work to begin on their arrangement and description. The project is being undertaken in the Modern Papers section of the Department of Special Collections and Western Manuscripts by the Project Archivist, Michael Hughes, and his Assistant, Matthew Neely, and is scheduled for completion in 2004.

Information about the Berlin papers at the Bodleian Library is now available online. These pages provide details about the project, the scope of the papers, interim finding aids and contact information. The final catalogue is being compiled using Encoded Archival Description (EAD), in common with other electronic catalogues of Western manuscripts.

The collection will not be accessible to readers in its entirety until cataloguing work is completed, but individual sections will be made available as work progresses. Berlin’s diaries and early correspondence are now available for research, and further details are given on the Bodleian project website.
