In the long term it is hoped to post the text of much of Berlin’s published work on the site. For the time being, the text of Concepts and Categories is available in PDF form on an experimental basis.

The evolution of the text of Karl Marx

The original text of Karl Marx was very much longer than the Editors of the series for which it was commissioned, the Home University Library, were willing to accept. So Berlin cut it considerably. The uncut script survived; this has now been collated with the first edition of the book by Simon Toubeau, and posted on this site, with the excised material distinguished from the material that was retained.

The book went into four editions (1939, 1948, 1963 and 1978). Berlin made substantial changes for the third and fourth editions, and additions that he had made for a German translation published in 1959 were also added in the 1960 reprint of the second edition. Some of the changes were minor amendments, but some were substantial new passages, taking account of newly published material from Marx’s Nachlaß, and recent work by other scholars. Since Berlin’s death the chronology and content of these changes have started to be discussed, and in order to facilitate this discussion a table showing which changes were made when is being compiled for this site.

Unreferenced quotations

Bit by bit the sources of quotations left unreferenced by Berlin are being traced, often thanks to the kindness of experts in the relevant field. The missing sources are listed on this site as they come in. Links to the lists so far posted appear below. In the case of volumes other than Russian Thinkers occasional gap-filling of this sort also occurs in the lists of corrections to which links are provided above. The unreferenced essays in AC have been reprinted with references in later volumes.
